About the Biennial

In 2021 Borås is celebrating the 400th anniversary of its founding. In conjunction with the festivities, the Biennial will be expanded to include other artistic media and is changing its name to the Borås Art Biennial. The artworks will be exhibited in public spaces throughout the downtown area, along the Viskan River, and at the Borås Art Museum and the Textile Museum of Sweden.

Deep listening

The seventh biennial arranged by Borås Art Museum has the title Deep listening for longing and is curated by Stockholm-based Ulrika Flink and London-based Amanprit Sandhu. The title alludes to the value of being humble enough to listen deeply to each other, to ourselves, and to the world and the environment around us. The theme of the exhibition explores new forms of collectivity, something that is highly topical given the current state of the world.

Moving Out

The photographic works of international artists Akinbode Akinbiyi, Nina Mangalanayagam, and Santiago Mostyn are presented in public spaces as part of Moving Out, a regional collaboration with the municipalities of Vårgårda and Bollebygd.

Curators

Ulrika Flink has curated exhibitions throughout Sweden and abroad in recent years. Her latest exhibition in Borås, Somewhere in Between at the Borås Art Museum, which concluded in January 2020, explored the landscape’s memory, national identity, and the role of myth in the writing of history.

Flink is currently working in Hökarängen, outside Stockholm, as Artistic Director for Konsthall C, a leading force in a socially engaged art scene where innovation and curatorial and artistic experiments take center stage. Fink also works as Artistic Director for the arts advocacy organization Konstfrämjandet Stockholm. Internationally, she has curated for prestigious exhibitions such as Momentum 9 in 2017, an important arena for contemporary Nordic art.

Flink has long experience of working with art locally, nationally, and internationally, including institutions such as Tensta Konsthall, Autograph ABP (London), the Tate Modern, and Bonniers Konsthall. She has a master’s degree in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London.

Amanprit Sandhu is a curator and writer based in London. As a freelance curator, she focuses on art for public spaces, performance art, and methods of collaborating. She was one of the founders of the curatorial collective DAM Projects (2014–2020), whose work brought attention to underexposed artists, art scenes, discourses, and socio-political debates.

Her previous positions include: Interim Curator at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire; Public Programme and Residencies Curator at Camden Art Centre; Projects Curator for Art on the Underground; Performance Curator for Art13 and Art14 in London; Project Manager for the Folkestone Triennial in 2012 and 2014; Frieze Foundation Projects and Assistant Curator for the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art.

She is a guest lecturer in the undergraduate program at Chelsea College of Arts and a guest instructor in the graduate program in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art. From 2017 through 2020 she was on the Board of Directors for Arts Catalyst.
